A Very Brief History of Discrimination

1865 – 13th Amendment abolished slavery

1868 – 14th Amendment says equal protection of the law

1870 – 15th amendment guaranteed the right to vote for all men

1875 – Civil Rights Act of 1875 forbid racial segregation

1890s – South enacted poll taxes, literacy tests and grandfather clause in order to bar African Americans from voting

1896 – Plessy v. Ferguson created separate but equal laws constitutional

1947 – Jackie Robinson broke down color barriers in MLB

1954 – Brown v. Board of Education outlawed segregation in public education facilities

1964 – Civil Rights Act 1964 ended all state and local laws that required segregation
