Chain

This coming Saturday, we’re offering audiences an extra glimpse into the works of Pearl Cleage: a staged reading and discussion of Pearl Cleage’s powerful short play Chain. It’s a brutally honest and poetic exploration of drug addiction, family, religion, and personal salvation. Rosa, who is fighting literally and metaphorically to escape from what her life charlettehas become, speaks directly to the audience as she examines the best and the worst of herself. It’s a journey that echoes Ava’s journey in Late Bus to Mecca (and elsewhere), and a character who, like a lot of Pearl Cleage’s characters, you can’t help falling in love with.

Directed by ensemble member Julie Daley, Chain will feature Jeff Citation winner Charlette Speigner (Actress in a Supporting Role - Blues for an Alabama Sky). A post-show discussion follows the reading, which will take place at the Victory Gardens Greenhouse Theater Saturday, August 25 at 2 pm. Send me an email to reserve a seat.
